That's exactly why I'm so hesitant to read the novel after watching and really liking The Untamed.

I've read some parts of it and I know the seme/uke rules are very serious business and I could deal with that, but the stuff that comes with... that is just not to my liking? I don't NEED them to mention lube but I need the uke to not bleed jfc. (LWJ would maybe be possessive to an extend but he would NEVER hurt WWX)

I'm only in a third or halfway into the story but I heard the sex scenes are easily skipped because they're extra chapters.

The actual in-plot smut is in one of the very last chapters and the rest is in some of the extras. There also are the censored versions, though I'm not sure if they have seperate translations.

There is very little actual sex in the novel proper. Offhand as I can recall there's a handjob and I think the last chapter is the only one with any penetration. Everything else is in the extra chapters which can be easily skipped.

You can skip the extra chapters which is where the more explicit sex scenes are but honestly, I'm not really into any of the seme/uke stuff even if it's not graphic. It's still weird to me.

Dub-con is a kink of mine - is that why people say they don't like the sex in the novel? (only seen some of the live action so far)

I get how it'd be weird after so long building up a genuine romantic relationship though

It's basically "the author isn't great at sex scenes". I've seen this a lot in Chinese BL, how some authors seem to like(?) or at least subscribe to the belief that it it doesn't hurt/the bottom doesn't weep it's done wrong or something. The in-plot sex is not dub-con but it does follow the kinda annoying "weepy bottom" yaoi trope a bit. There is a scene in one of the extras that implies they basically BOTH have a bit of a rape kink, but it's kinda an accidental discovery in a lucid dream.

I don’t know the source at all, and I’ve never been into anime before, so seme/uke isn’t something I’ve experienced directly. But I definitely feel like I’ve had this same reaction to certain fanfics over the years.

I personally hate doms who are dark and dubcon-y, and sometimes it can feel like those things are being conflated, which really squicks me.

And yeah, that specific type of submissive that’s straight up childlike is another huge turn off for me. I don't even know if I find it squicky, so much as just boring.

He's not very dark though and initially ashamed of any dubcon-y thoughts until he knows that the other actually shares that kink. The initial smut reads as dubcon because it follows the "weepy bottom no means yes" tropes to a certain extent. I think the sex scenes are not very well written but it's not nearly as dark and evil as some people pretend.
