I'm guessing those bookends in the picture are the two people you can't get straight? Yeah, fair enough.
Say what you like about manga's predilection for crazy-ass hairstyles in a range of improbable colours, but goddamn does it ever help with the sameface.

Are the people named Lan in this and the previous secret supposed to be identical triplets or something?

No, the Lan in #5 does have a twin brother though.

Before I try to explain anything else, if you are even that interested, are you planing on reading this and not wanting spoilers?

Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen aren't twins. Lan Xichen is a few years older.

Oops, Thanks for the correction it's been a while since I've read the book, or watched anything MDZS related.

They all belong to the same clan/sect and are not actually blood related for the most part, the colour coded uniforms and similar hairstyles don't help though.

I've on episode ten of the live-action series and I can't like tell anyone apart besides the two leads and it makes me feel so racist and terrible

all the dudes have the EXACT SAME HAIRSTYLE THOUGH omg

THE EXACT SAME

Hey, at least some are colour coded! But yeah, I had the same issue with a lot of live action shows. Not so much with this one strangely, but I think that's because knew the plot before so I knew who did what beforehand.

Hahaha, yeah, the hair is distracting. You have to pay more attention to people's facial features and what color clothes they're wearing.

Lan Sizhui has the extra locks of hair on the sides of his face & Lan Jingyi's ponytail is considerably shorter. If that helps. They are pretty hard to tell apart on first watch, though.

Granted, they're also not in much of the donghua yet, so you don't get a lot of opportunity to learn to tell them apart, either. Or much time to have to worry about it, if you want to look at it that way.

Yeah that was confusing to me for a while too. I also kept getting Jin Zixuan, and Jin Zixun confused reading the novel.
