Just yesterday I was reading an article that used the phrase "da bomb" and had to back out, so I feel this.

What, you didn't like The Emoji Movie?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They've always made me cringe big time. Both old and new...

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say as I have ever noticed a meme reference in a movie or show tbh.

They're okay if they work in the movie but add an extra layer for people who know the meme (like Shuri saying "what are thoooooose?" at T'Challa's sandals, which works just as a joke about him dressing for the elders while in Shuri's hi-tech lab) but straight-up references date so fast.

I loved that movie but that one was straight-up cringey. It will not age well.

Nayrt but I had no idea about the meme (and come to think of it haven’t looked up the ref yet) when I saw Black Panther and it worked for the reason anon mentioned. But it probably will or already does feel weird if you know it!

I didn't even know it was a meme, and when someone mentioned it was, I was like, "Oh they made a meme about that bit from Hercules where Pain and Panic are wearing Hercules merch?"

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
+1. I also feel this in the pokemon with kanto/gen 1 and power rangers with the original series

I've been told that the new Doolittle film has a squid say the phrase 'snitches get stitches' and that John Cena plays a polar bear that uses the word 'bro' a lot.

Nothing ages a film quicker than memes or popular phrases from a very specific time.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Is "bro" outdated? Shit, bro, I'm screwed.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Snitches get stitches" isn't a meme. It's a super old schoolyard saying, like "sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me." I don't know exactly when it dates, but it comes across as quaint, so it is cringey but not cringey like a meme is.
