Yeah, but anon wouldn't be able to complain anymore.

Wasn't a complaint.

I'll definitely offer feotakahari's suggestion the next time people complain about all the white men in media!

Is there a lot of fic based on Asian and African media?

Have you never heard of anime?

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Heard of it, yes. Never watched any or looked for any fic of it, so I don't know how the quantity compares to Western media.

It's very popular, of course it varies from show to show, but more often than not there's a shit ton.

Anime is a very hit-and-miss genre for me, and anime that's popular enough to get a large English-language fandom is practically all miss. I don't want to be in a fandom for some shojo show or some fetishistic thing about teenage girls.

K-Dramas? You can narrow down the creepy side of anime a lot just by looking at what genre it is too. Most popular anime is shonen from what I can recall, so while elements like that do exist in some, it's not that hard to find a popular anime that doesn't have things like that.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the K-dramas I've tried have been soapier than I care for.

And I actually meant shonen in my post, not shojo. I really do apologize for that mistake - it's been a while since I actively paid attention to the genre (because every time I check in on it, it seems like all the shows that people are excited about and making fanworks for fall into those categories one way or another).

I don't think there's anything wrong with shonen or soap operas but it's not really what I'm looking for and I reject the idea that this is a character flaw.

Anime isn't a genre. It's a media form. And that media form has a lot of genres tgat aren't ecchi lolibait.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That part of my post was specifically discussing anime with a substantial English-language fanbase, not anime as a medium as a whole

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
And that part's just...not true.

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
yes there is a lot of fanfic in the anime/manga fandom, in the kpop rpf fandom, in fandoms for asian dramas and bollywood movies and for asian video games. You are missing out

Re: op

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously..... Kpop RPF? That's what we're going with here? For real? People are missing out on Kpop RPF?

Re: op

Your very selective reading capabilities kind of explain why you'd think there's no fandom for any non-US media.

+1

To be honest, I don't think it's unreasonable to want diverse things made in the society that you are a member of and belong to and grew up in. I don't think that "just watch Asian and African media" is a panacea here and I think suggesting that, because people want diverse media from their own society instead of watching Asian or African media, they're insincere and just want to complain is frankly horseshit.

This x a million.

Agreed. I'm in Canada, and if you look at Canadian media, it's completely not representative of the diversity of the population. (The one exception being APTN, but I am pretty sure there is no fic for anything on APTN. Literature is better, but other than the Handmaid's Tale it's not like there's a plethora of fic or fandom based on that.) There's no shortage of diverse talent here and no reason our TV and movies have to be so white.

I'm in the US but I agree.

As for the OP, to be honest I'm often cynical myself thinking that fandoms without slashable white guys don't get much fic, but I know it's not always as simple as that.

However I like to think that as media gets more diverse (I hope) fandom would reflect that too.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I do watch media from Asia. But I'd like to see more diversity in American media too, and I don't really appreciate the snotty insinuation that wishing for diversity means that I'm a whiner who doesn't consume international TV or movies.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not as funny as you think you are.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Also, I mean...there is a ton of media (even in Western fandoms) that don't focus predominately on white men. This reminds me of people on Reddit who go, "Waaahhh, why don't people make ORIGINAL movies?" They are.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
This. I don't even consume all that much media but I can still think of at least a dozen things off the top of my head that aren't focused on white men.
