I would also recommend The Beautiful Room is Empty by Edmund White. Really, the way to navigate gay literature is to focus on the "literature" and avoid books that are essentially trashy romance for gay men.

OMG, that's one of my favorite books ever! Took me a moment to recognize the title, because I read it in the original German version... but it's actually a literal translation of the title^^

It's fantastic. It was 2002, I believe, and one of my friends was going on and on about this book until I got fed up and demanded for a loan - at which point she gleefully disclosed that the book was actually in German D: It got translated soon after, though, and my life was filled with joy.

I actually never knew it got translated before I read your comment above ;-) It's so awesome for the author that he gets international recognition for this amazing book!
There was a sort of follow-up to that book as well, a collection of short stories (some of which do feature characters from The Center of the World) called 'Defender'. It wasn't quite as good as the original, but I enjoyed it a lot as well. I don't know if it got translated, though.

Yay for this book, though. It's one of the few books that I can read over and over and over again and never get bored =)
