I feel like this secret is trying to out-woke the previous one that said they only liked obnoxious male characters in slash.

So now everyone has to ship everything or they are judging people who do ship? That's not how it works. People are allowed to personally not ship something.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
....no?

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-02-08 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Then how are you offended by the secret? The secret is talking about their personal shipping preferences.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not offended. OP can ship anything however they like.

In this case, that obviously means removing obnoxious men entirely from the equation. Which, to me, feels like they're trying to one-up the previous OP who only likes obnoxious male characters in slash. Which may not be this OP's intention at all, but I'm still rolling my eyes.

You really think that someone is trying to one-up another secret just by stating their personal preferences? That seems really strange to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I really think people on this comm enjoy making a display out of how woke they are via their tastes in and issues with media. It's puzzling to me, too, since the comm is mostly anon, but that's my perception. If you think I'm strange for that, fine, that's your prerogative!

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god you precious little snowflake. how do you cope with like, anything?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Original-comment-OP: It's not. That comment is what made me think of this comment in the first place, but I didn't think about it the way you put it.

This is really how I feel. I don't think there could really be anything woke about it, because it is just how I feel and what I find myself liking. And if anything, the fact that it's inconsistent bothers me - that's why it's a secret in the first place.

Also, thank you so much to the secretmaker for turning this into a secret!!!

I'm one of the anons who commented agreeing with yesterday's secret, and this is my thought exactly. "Wokeness" has nothing to do with it - it's just how I feel. If either you or yesterday's OP thought you were being "woke," you wouldn't have submitted your opinions to be secrets in the first place.

I don't see anything woke about it?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're really upset that some people don't like het, huh?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally feel this. As a shipper of F/F exclusively, I have a pretty low personal tolerance for most Male Character Archetypes, but put that archetype into a female character (and then throw her into Insert Trope Here with Other Female Character!) and I'm all over it.

There might be a point to be made about those kinds of archetypes and how they feel subversive when applied to female characters rather than the default dudes (again)... but honestly? I'm just all about the ladies, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know if i'm more lenient of this with f/f, as i can't think of any of my f/f ships that have one character that's super obnoxious in it.

but, i do know that i am much more lenient on asshole/awful female characters than male characters who are just as bad. it's not fair of me, but at the same time i really don't care, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I COMPLETELY agree and 75% of that is because of the sheer disparity between m/m and f/f ships in fandom. Something I've seen a thousand times with dudes becomes somehow innovative just by changing the gender and I love it. The other 25% is that I'm super gay and love ladies in general.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer neither.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't have to even be f/f ships, just female characters and I feel this way. It's an archetype that is really stale with male characters, but is largely unexplored with female characters. (And I mean "obnoxious" on, say, House level, not "bitchy" or "ambitious".)

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What is this painting? I love it.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel this way too, and it doesn't need a reason, but I think the reason for me is that as others have pointed out, it's a stale formula for m/m but rarely seen in f/f. That's also why friends-to-lovers between two cinnamon roll female characters bores me to death but I like it when it's done with male characters.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I find that I am far more likely to write rough sex/belligerent sexual tension/people being loving assholes to each other if the characters are the same sex.

I suspect that there is so much baggage in traditional m/f pairings that when writing them I just want people to be sweet to each other, end of story. With same sex pairings, even if there are power dynamics in the story, the power dynamics are ~different~. I feel more comfortable getting edgy there.

So I can see where OP is coming from.

This so hard. I actually didn't get into slash pairings for like my first ten years in fandom, and when I finally did, the main thing that made me realize I might never go back to het was how much more free I felt to be edgy with slash. And I don't mean that I was self-policing my taste in het, I mean I literally just couldn't enjoy anything more than a tiny bit edgy for my het ships. I'd just get squicked and/or want to flip a table whenever shit got edgy.
