There are good reasons to like Azula and not Envy, as they have plenty of differences and so do their respective series (which, yes, can matter), but I think Azula is forgiven by a lot of fans for being a girl, "gay coded," and mentally ill.

Not trying to be obtuse or a jackass, genuinely curious, how was she gay-coded? Been a hot minute since I’ve seen the show, but I don’t remember anything specific.

To be fair, Envy is pretty damn queer-coded. But on the other hand, yeah, while people have lots of headcanons for Envy's mental state, Azula had an entire episode delineating exactly what hers was, all but spelling out for us what was going on with her. It's not hard to see where she gets more sympathy than a literal monster.
