Re: What media did you recently finish?

I like the MC, he's unusual for BL stories. Shen Wei (the professor) is a bit typical as he's silent, pining, restrained kind of guy, but I feel that the actor portrayed him very movingly so he wasn't boring.
I'm not sure if I'll finish the novel. I watched the TV series first and I prefer them to the book.
Agreed on the fillers and unnecessary side stories.

Agreed about the two leads. Zhao Yunlan was a pretty atypical BL lead, and even though he had a kind of asshole cowboy personality, he/the actor managed to carry it so well that I just found him really likable. Shen Wei was definitely a more common BL trope, but the actor's performance was just so wonderful that I found his elegance and devotion really moving. I was pretty obsessed with both of them.

It sounds like the book and TV series are pretty different; or rather, the TV series had to make a number of changes to get through censorship in addition to the normal tweaks to adapt something. I overall really liked the TV series, even though it had a lot of flaws (mostly in the filler stuff, got a bit cheesy and the tertiary characters were either boring or obnoxious, and it kept neatly tying up subplots in a way that felt like a Disney kids' show that really took away from the more somber, serious, and truly exciting stuff.) It was all worth it for the two leads though, and I really liked a few side characters as well (Zhu Hong the snake woman, Da Qing the catboy, and Old Chu especially.)

Old Chu is awesome! I'm almost sure that he and Guo (the naive guy) is a side pairing in the series. It really resembles Disney with the vilains with weird motivations for their evelness. I heard that they had a pretty large budget cut so that might be the reason some special effects are rushed. I fast forwarded a lot tbh.
