I feel you, but the shippers of those side pairings are probably really glad the author didn't tag them.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
There should be a distinction between main pairings and other pairings but I guess that's not really a change you can roll out retroactively

I dunno, if they're endgame for the fic it seems as though they must be fairly major?

(Did the author CNTW?)

also, OP, this is a beautifully constructed secret.

Assuming they even read the story.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
This is a concern I have with a fic I'm working on: It's about ship A, but the characters of ship B are present for a good chunk of it, and are in an established relationship. I'm definitely tagging the characters of ship B, but using the pairing tag might lead to disappointment for people wanting to read about ship B.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
I forget the exact tag I've seen used, but adding 'secondary', or 'background' in the tags after the lesser focused on ships. Also be sure to tag them in order of how involved they are, as in; Main paring goes first, no tags.
Second most relevant ship/ship that is present but not a major focus second, tag 'secondary', Third most relevant ship/the one that gets low focus and mostly mentioned in passing scenes third, tag 'background'.

If this makes any sense at all, that is;;

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a situation where asking the author to add the tags is fine.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
There is no situation where asking the author to add the tags is fine.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thats ridiculous. It's just a tag request.

Nobody's asking the author to change the story in anyway. Just to tag a ship. It's probably one of the most benign requests someone could make.

You could even word it in a way that doesn't show your displeasure. Just hint that they'd get more views if the other pairing was tagged.

No situation? Really? Absolutely no situation at all?

Gore?
Torture?
Rape/Noncon?

Should we just place a barrier between reader and author in which positive praise is the only interaction allowed?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
DA Or as it was for me last month, partner violence?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ships you're not into: just like untagged torture.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Don't get lippy because you got called out.

nayrt

You're not very good at joking, you know that right.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
This has got to be a wind-up. This is the silliest thing I've read today.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
You're either trolling, or you're an asshole. Honestly not sure which.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
How about: when the author is absolutely fine with being asked to add tags. :p

Not that I would ever NOT tag an endgame ship (since I have NOTPs myself in my current fandom), but I'm still learning tagging etiquette. I wouldn't take it personally if someone asked me to tag something I would never have thought of. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
And people with this attitude are exactly the reason I always add a "let me know if you think there are tags missing" to my author notes.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I really don't get the point when people do that. Parings are the easiest thing to tag, and even if they weren't planned at first you can add them as soon as they're relevant to the plot.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I know right!? Some of my favourite fics have been ones where the author has mentioned in the notes that the tags will change. It's good organisation and I really appreciate the effort.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I love the way you formatted this secret, OP!

There's very likely a reason for this, which is that people often complain when their OTPs are tagged but aren't the main couple. It's possible the author is trying to avoid that sort of backlash. Or maybe someone outright asked them before not to tag side couples and they're fulfilling that request.

Honestly, no matter what you do with tags, you're going to upset someone. Tag, don't tag - you will never please everyone.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-11 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Do tags like "X/Z (minor)" or X/Z (background)" show up in the main pairing tags?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of them are synned to the main pairing tags, yeah. Not all, because AO3's allergic to consistency, but a lot.
