I feel a little bit of that, definitely terrified of people hating things I recommend

But I also get annoyed bc no one actually follows recommendations

Do they not follow up on the recommendations (and say) because it's not their taste/what they're into, or do they keep saying they'll watch/read/etc but never do?

Do you follow recommendations?

About half of my fandom friends don't watch anything I recommend (even though, obviously, we have SOME overlaps in tastes or we wouldn't have met via fandom). I don't take it personally; I just throw recs over the wall and watch what I want.

I sometimes feel this way. But there are also some things that I absolutely adore and know are awesome. I will always recommend Tolkien, Babylon 5, and Doctor Who to everyone. Those are quality.

If it's Moffat's Doctor Who, I'd hard pass. I guess I'm trying to say that even those aren't universal.

In return I wanted to say that Avatar the Last Airbender is gourmet television, even including live action shows in comparison. However I feel it's possible/likely that people won't get hooked on the interesting cycle of reincarnation and responsibility stemming from that landing on a young kid who never asked for it. Even though I think it's a fantastic show, I admit that it might just bounce off folks. Feel free to tell me if it would bounce off you as well.

I don't think anything s universal. I just mean I think the quality of those is good enough that I trust my own judgment enough to recommend them.

Oh and I love ATLA. But I think I wouldn't automatically recommend a cartoon unless I knew the person liked animation.

Focus on trying to recommend things you think are to other people's taste, not things that are """good""". The fact of the matter, in fandom especially, is that a lot of people love stuff with mediocre to deeply shitty writing because it's doing other things that really appeal to them. And that's fine! Hooray for people enjoying things!

Some people will have similar taste to you and some won't. Anyone who judges you for that is kind of a jerk, but if you want to worry about it less, pay some attention to what your friend's favorite things are and see if you can pick out the patterns.
