What are your favorite foreign films?
kaijinscendre: (horror fanworks)

Well, here are some horror recs

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2020-02-11 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Pontypool, is a unique Canadian zombie film. Rammbock is a great German zombie film.

The Host, Mother, and Memories of Murder are all great movies by Bong Joon Ho. The Wailing and Train To Busan are also great.

Under the Shadow is a fantastic Persian horror film involving djinn.

Inside and Them are great examples of New French Extremity. Cache and The Vanishing are two other great French horror.

The City of Lost Children. It's really beautiful, in a bleak sort of way. The set design and film direction is incredible, and I love the characters, even though the story's a little on the simplistic side.

Seconded! I have so much love for that movie.

Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I pop in Detroit Metal City. It's based on a manga, but I honestly found the manga too drawn-out and boring at times; the live-action movie distills it down into the absolutely perfect package. It's about a boy who just wants to write and perform cutesy folk pop, but ends up looped into a metal band instead, and it turns out he's really talented at it. It's so funny. And the music! If you like metal, it is a seriously solid soundtrack, and I super recommend it.

Amelie, because I'm always a slut for magical realism.

Paris, je t'aime is a really fun short film anthology, lots of different genres and good turns in it.

Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage both wreck my shit to this day.

I love Pan's Labyrinth!

Ugh I hated Pan's Labyrinth but I think a great deal of that was because I was tricked into watching it when a friend was like, "Oh you like fantasy films, here, watch this!"

This being a dreary and gore filled sad film about escapism...

Wicker Man is British I believe. Goodbye Christopher Robin as well. Lion. Ex Machina. The live action Cinderella. Hero and 2046 from China. Oldboy from South Korea. Ju-on: The Grudge, Seven Samurai, Ringu, and Audition from Japan. Underground is a great Serbian movie. Volver is Spanish. Good Bye Lenin from Germany. Atonment is jointly British and French. The Secret in their Eyes is jointly Spanish and Argentinian (the American remake was awful).

Yup. The remake is garbage. The original is my top favorite horror movie of all time.

[Rec.] is one of my favorite horror movies, and truly terrifying.

Let The Right One In is a pretty great coming-of-age/horror movie.

And a shout-out to Pontypool, which isn't foreign to me because I am Canadian, but it's good.

Why are all my favorite foreign films horror movies?

Heck yeah, [REC]! I love [REC]: Genesis even though it's not as good as the others, just for the pissed off bride with the chainsaw being all, "THIS IS MY FUCKING WEDDING DAY FUCK YOU ALL!" <3

Uzumasa Limelight. It's one of my all-time top three films because it's just so beautifully crafted and well-acted.

Define "foreign". You do realize that not everyone here comes from the same country?

Man, OP even mentioned the Oscars to help you out. Look at all the replies above you that managed to parse what they meant without being a whiny baby.

Foreign: Any country not your own. There you go. Someone even mentioned a Canadian film because GASP, it is foreign to them, as they are not Canadian.
