Okay. I was hasty there. Yes, there are women who are naturally thin, and even if they ate a truckload of food they would still be thin. But these are not most women, and women with this body type are overrepresented in media compared to more average looking women. Yoko is a decent example though of a woman who works out. She isn't just thin, but has some muscle there too, so I see where the OP is coming from, but holding her up as some kind of beacon of what 'real' woman looks like is absurd when she looks pretty much like every other female anime character.

Are you really reading this secret? The OP did nothing of the sort, she just said that Yoko looked hot and delightfully curvy for an anime character. No mention of any 'real' woman as far as the eye can see.

Thanks. Body-bashing is something of a pet-peeve of mine since it just seems to be very ineffective way to strive for women to be respected no matter their shape.

I think this might be a case of YMMV, since Yoko does seem a bit thicker in the stomach compared to the majority of anime heroines (yay!) but in other ways her design perpetuates unrealistic standards for girls (she's FOURTEEN?).

I also did not read the secret of placing Yoko as the prototypical Real Woman, but basically another kinda of "I'd Hit It" secret. Evidently filled with wank bait XD

Yes. I perhaps chose my words wrong. No they didn't talk about her being a prototypical woman, but I found it hypocritical to talk about an anime woman having 'curves' and that being a turn on, while using the example of a character that isn't really that much a deviation from the norm. But I suppose baby steps are better than none.

...she's fourteen? Sheesh. XD!

Formerly Anonymous here!

I haven't seen Yoko's series, but from what I've seen from her design, she is a quite a bit curvier around the hips (http://usuarios.lycos.es/vpenya/hpbimg/utena.jpg) and middle (http://tasukete.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/background_chara_raimei.jpg) compared to typical (http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u303/Mary1803/SuperSailorMoon.jpg) anime (http://www.myblog.fr/albums/pretear_3/727846.jpg) heroines (http://www.blackcerenity.com/pics/tsubasa.jpg).

I'm a fan of the female characters I just linked to, as they are all pretty badass. I just think their body types actual represent a style typical from the 90s on in anime (male characters are affected too). But if the secret-maker was mostly exposed to anime with that kind of art, I can understand why she would consider Yoko's design to be a deviation from the norm. In the case of her stomach, I would agree (the boobs, though? Oh, the boobs).

Why applaud "perfect hourglass figure" like it's so much more realistic than "stick thin?"
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (huh?)

I don't think she did. I think she just pointed out that Yoko's body type is different from most anime heriones.

But... it isn't. I mean, I can go get some examples if you don't believe me.

Re: 153.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I absolutely agree with you, and am curious if you saw anything in my comments indicating I thought otherwise? After rereading, the closest thing I saw to myself applauding "perfect hourglass figure" was this: Yoko does seem a bit thicker in the stomach compared to the majority of anime heroines (yay!).

And I stand by this comment. I think it's a good thing to show more female characters as having rounder bellies, like many women have in real life. I'm not sure what that has to do with "perfect hourglass" figures, though. And as for my next post, I wasn't arguing that a curvier character design was somehow "much more realistic" than the designs of Raimei, Sailor Moon, Utena, etc., but I was arguing that Yoko's character design could be seen as deviating from a norm typical for designing female characters.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to clarify, even if your question was rhetorical rather than presented for me directly.

It wasn't really directed at you. It was just a general comment about the direction I felt the discussion was going in.

I also think it would be good to show more female (and male) characters with rounder bellies, but I'm not ready to hail Yoko's design as revolutionary and I don't think it's a considerable step up in any way.

I understand what you're saying. Just looking at TV Trope's entry on Gainaxing (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Gainaxing) proves the point that Yoko can also be considered more of the same. However, even "Gainaxed" characters tend not to have (in my experience) the rounder belly which the secret-maker especially noticed, so in other ways Yoko's design is a small step up.

And in other ways... not so much (fourteen? FOURTEEN!). One step forwards...
