While Mulder did suffer a palpable degradation in later seasons, I quit watching during Season 8 and Dogget was part of the reason. But, whatever, it's kind of nice that even if I couldn't enjoy it, someone else did.

^ this. Including being glad that someone enjoyed it.

I never liked Mulder, but I never made it that far in X-Files;;

I like you, OP, you're crazy

Thanks. I like you too. :)

Huh, I should atch this season. Mulder annoys me for some reason but I like Scully (sp?).

(Anonymous) 2020-02-14 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You should give it a go. Mulder is a dick. He always was and always will be. Doggett is not a dick. He gets thrown in the deep end but he always tries to fight for what's right.

I wasn't a big fan of the later seasons, but I will say... Dogget provided hands-down my favorite later-season moment. I don't remember the case/episode itself at all, beyond that they were looking for a boy, so he was going around with a photograph asking people if they'd seen him.

Haha!

I can't agree with you about Mulder, but I liked Doggett and Reyes better than a lot of people apparently did. And that season had the *perfect* ending - Mulder and Scully reunited with William. I wish they had left it there.

not the OP; i've gotten to the doggett season/s and i like him (haven't gotten to reyes yet) but i'm finding the season in general difficult to watch. i feel like they're trying to pivot the focus away from scully (which may have been the point, since i remember hearing talk of the series continuing with reyes and doggett as the ones in charge of the x-files and scully and mulder moving on) and considering what's going on with her i'd like to see at least a little more focus on what she's going through.

I love Doggett and I'm very pleased to see someone else who does. The Doggett seasons are among the few that I own.

OP

I really love Doggett. I makes me happy to know I'm not the only one either. :D

Man, how does it feel to be just so wrong in life?

Taste is subjective, but yeah, my feelings exactly.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Probably won't be seen, but I did mean this to be tongue-in-cheek

(Anonymous) 2020-02-14 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Doggett but I really wished he'd been in a better season. There were a couple of good episodes but mostly they were just terribly written and tired.

(Anonymous) 2020-02-14 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
one kind of has to wonder what kept you watching the first seven seasons, but okay

Sercret OP

I never watched The X-Files during its original run so when they announced new episodes a few years back I marathoned all 9 seasons over about 2 months. The thing that surprised me was how patchy the earlier seasons were - a lot of the stories fell really flat and the main characters were written so differently from episode to episode. Around season 6-7 you could tell that Duchovney was just phoning it in. Doggett was the fantastic breath of fresh air that the show needed.

NAYRT - Honestly, what it sounds like to me is that the datedness of the earlier seasons is a greater barrier to your enjoyment than the hot mess of “pulled this out of their asses” characters and plots of the later seasons.

In S8, TXF finally started to feel vaguely modern. Messy, forced, and focused on all the wrong things - but modern. It also became basically a different show than the show it had consistently been until that point. That's why people who actually like TXF don't take your XF opinions seriously when you say you prefer S8. Because what you're basically saying is that you don't like TXF. You only like the show it tried to become when it stopped being the show it was.

I don't hate Doggett, and I concede that Mulder could be annoying, but for me, Mulder and Scully were the show.

Also, while I don't hate Doggett, I have always hated and will always hate his presence in the show. By which I mean, the fact that the writers didn't just let Scully be the sole lead of S8 (with Skinner and TLG as backup), and make the first two thirds of S8 about her brave and badass ongoing search for Mulder, while trying to keep her shit together enough to keep her job and not have a miscarriage.

That should've been S8, IMO, and I'll never get over the crappy decision to just rush another penis into the show and keep doing basically the same thing they'd been doing for the first seven years, except doing it worse.

i think you just nailed why i'm having such trouble continuing with season 8, although i had started with the intent to at least finish that season. i feel like so much focus is being taken away from her (granted, i haven't gotten that far in the season) when she has so much going on that i want to see more of than what we're getting.

Thanks secret-maker for turning my comment into a secret. I knew it would be a good one. :)
