I'm sympathetic to people that believe there is a better version of TROS out there somewhere. There's so much evidence that the production was incredibly rushed and things were changing until the last possible moment (the runtime going from 2:37 to 2:22, ADR lasting into December, etc.). But I'm with you - I ship things without canon support all the time. The Mouse can't stop me here either.

Yup. Problem is, the better version wasn't made. The better version is what would have been made had JJ Abrams not been rehired to make it.

Yeah, I will readily believe lots of things got cut, but that doesn't mean those extra bits would have fixed everyone's complaints and tied up everything with a bow.

Everything I've read indicates that the beginning of the movie changed the most. Which, yes, was a mess, but it wasn't the reason the movie was a failure to me. That came down to how Abrams and Terrio absolutely did not care about the ST characters as much as they did hollow OT fanservice.
