External validation is not confidence, but external validation is also nice. Most humans like external validation and get something out of it. It is silly to pretend otherwise. And most women are socialized to get validation out of appreciation of their looks. I don't want to get validation out of that, and most of the time I don't care one way or the other, but sometimes I do care. You can't completely escape socialization. That's not liberal feminism, that's just being human. And the idea of external validation being important for women is a traditional values thing, not a liberal feminism thing.
