To be fair, there are (unfortunately) a heck of a lot of people who DO lie about or exaggerate that kind of thing online for attention or money. One of my friends made the mistake of donating some money to someone who supposedly needed it for medical treatment and it turned out to be a scam, and I personally knew someone in real life who faked having a chronic condition online because they wanted the attention. It's not at all uncommon.
