I wonted some mention of foot binding. I one version of the novel Mulan has it magically undone while at war and then having it again near the pond with her ancessors or something. Mulan looks really predictable and boring so far.

I'm not sure that'd be realistic. The process of foot binding would cripple her feet for life. You can't just undo it and expect to walk like normal - it'd be way too late for that by Mulan's age. And no way could she fight on foot, the binding makes walking difficult.

yeah, she'd need magic.

Isn't the era she's from before recordings of foot binding? And I believe the general consensus is foot binding only really became popular in the late eras, when people mistook flowery descriptions of beautiful feet and light walking styles and took it to literally mean smaller feet are more beautiful.

Not a historian, so I could be wrong...

Possibly, yeah, but Mulan is a folk tale. It would have roots before foot binding, but like any folk tale, can be retold or adapted however suits society at the time.

Mulan is a folk tale with a lot of adaptations. The original story is pre foot-binding, but I have seen a story where she had, like, a special lotion or something? To change her feet back and forth? It's a folk tale: a lot of magic just slips in to that kind of thing without comment.

It was popular for a very long time, from X to almost our time. I was surprised by this version of the tail. If the movie went there it'd be different. I like the crossdressing plot, I like the story but I don't want to see a Disney movie retelling.

Why? She wouldn't be able to pass as a man if her feet had been bound, because it involves breaking the bones of the foot and turning them under. If she had it done again as an adult, her feet wouldn't be small enough to be considered attractive anyway. And foot-binding wasn't done for all that long compared to the entire history of China. Why have to magically heal her feet when you can just set it in a different era/place from the start?

I didn't make it clear but this is how it's told in one version of Mulan tale that was created during this practice. I'd love to see it on screen. It'd be an interesting commentary on society of that time.

NAYRT - I cannot imagine Disney putting footbinding into one of their family films. Death, sure, but not 'let's break all the bones in this child's foot, fold it in half, and let it heal into a hideous mutant stump that will never stop hurting'.

if you think disney will put foot binding in a movie you are completely off your goddamn head
