Coming at it from a different angle, I thought Seven was an interesting concept as a character arc. But (and I haven't watched the series in years so my memory isn't great) I always felt any interest was secondary to her being there as male-gazey eye candy.

I think that she did end up being very male-gazey, but there were also some episodes that made her more than that. I hated the gazey part of the character, but I liked the other parts. Her journey was interesting to me.

Oh definitely, her journey is interesting because the idea of someone who was assimilated having to learn to be human again can't not be interesting. And she was in the Collective for way longer than Picard (and Seven from childhood too) so it's not like you can say it was definitely done before.

This secret promoted me to read up a bit more about her to refresh my memory and it also doesn't surprise me the show deliberately downplayed anything that could be interpreted as shippy with Janeway. Feels like this sort of thing is a common theme in science fiction. It's my favourite genre ever but for all the claims of progressiveness, there's a lot of not so good shit in its history.

You should rewatch the episode where she gets a bunch of different Borg personalities in her and keeps changing her personalities. Phenomenal performance from Jeri Ryan.
