Re: OP, TW for suicide (and rampant stupidity)

First of all anon I'm sorry you ever felt that way, I really hope you're in a better place now but I say this while also believing it's not a process that has an end. Mental health is complicated and I know from experience some days are good, some days are bad. Most are inbetween and may you have more of the good and inbetween than the bad.

Anyway, I too didn't like the "it's like committing suicide" angle because not wanting to exist on Earth because of the sheer weight of what life is making me feel, and choosing a peaceful end after perhaps MILLIONS of years in the Good Place getting to achieve what I want are not the same thing for me. One is a dark place to be, the other sounds fulfilling and peaceful.

Thank you for your comment. I have been much better for a couple years, because life got nicer to me and because I finally found a medication that works. I hope it stays that way, but I know anything can happen.

I also think an important point that was missed by those viewers was that you don't have to leave the Good Place at all, and it avoided the common narrative blunder of "we're going to tell you that both choices are equally valid but show you that one of them is wrong/inferior." Because Tahani changed her mind about leaving even after doing everything she wanted to do and found a new reason to stay.

I'm glad you're feeling in a better place now and long may it continue!

Yes I think Tahani is being left out of the discussion a bit. Although for me that comes with a different level of existential angst - as in, does this mean she becomes the same as the angels/demons and has had to give up her humanity on some level? It's quite heavy for a comedy show I guess but it did make me wonder. But she seems happy to do what she's doing!

As I said in my original comment I get why a lot of people don't like it and feel like it goes against the hope offered by the show. But as someone who has struggled with the concept of "forever" and angsted about it (and believe me, teenage Goth me loved vampires for exactly that reason) - the ending totally appealed. I started thinking about the fact that being human involves knowing that there's an end someday and all the baggage that carries. I got why the people in the original Good Place would settle into an unfeeling zombie like existence where they don't feel the pleasure in paradise anymore.

I know not everyone is going to see it that way but it worked for me.

I also feel like there's a minor message, through Tahani, that i's ok for people to go to the Good Place and not want to walk through the door ever.
