This is such a vivid picture - I particularly like the phrase "like a Vietnam vet." Early teen you was not prepared for such a baptism of fire. I'm glad they got the message that some people are not cut out to be childminders. I bet you're good with animals, though.

It never happened to me. It was so obvious that I couldn't hack it that no parent I knew would trust me to look after their kids. I *was* once asked to, at work, and my expression was so completely horrified that a manager from another department offered to do it instead.

It was pretty obvious since first grade that I was not cut out for babies, and yet all the signs were ignored, and well I hate to say 'I told you so' but.
Seriously though I spent the entire rest of that night just crying because I was so traumatized over the whole situation that should never have happened in the first place.

FWIW I'm a veterinary technician now and the only time I see young children nowadays is if clients bring them to appointments with them. Which is a constant reminder of why I don't deal with children willingly. :)

I've told people I am not good with kids and they just stared at me like I was speaking some language that was completely incoherent to them. I know how you feel.

Now that's a happy ending - apart from the non-goat kids. Hope there aren't too many of those.
