I've had this show recommend to me before many times as a 'must watch' for the story-telling and gay-characters, but jfc I could not make it through the first season with how utterly abysmally Max is treated nearly the entire time, and what's more aggravating is that no one, fucking NO ONE ever mentions this shit when telling others to watch it.

But we got gays in here, so who cares if a black woman is being repeatedly and violently raped?

That's exactly it for some people tho. There are different things people can tolerate in their shows and that's not a statement on how bad the thing is in real life. Some people will tolerate rape for happy gays because they want happy gays. Sorry.

Technically she's only there because she tried to fuck over a bunch of pirates. Not that it makes it much better, but it's not as if she's there just for shock value or for some sad sort of view on society, unlike GoT. (and it's not like it shows anyone actually raping her for people to get off too, it's not meant to be hot)

the writers have said they regretted that plotline in s1, and nothing like it ever happens again. the show does a pretty dramatic turn in s2 onwards for the better, s1 is an outlier in terms of tone of the series and the show as a whole shouldn't be judged just based on that.
