Thirding this. You mean DISCOURAGING. Gawd, maybe if allowed, you'd be telling students all about "feminate disturbian literature" or the "seminarian works" of "people of collar"...

[Also, as a lit teacher - yes, we should teach a wide variety, and yes, teach works previously ignored or suppressed, and yes, obviously, teach new texts. But teach them in addition to those old texts by old white men. Without a basis in canonical texts, references to and rebellion from them become meaningless.]

Ah, of course - "dispirited" is also highly likely to have been the intended word. I was just too discouraged by the poster's spelling (and having too much fun disparaging their efforts) to think of that.
