Guys, it's just a mistake. Calm down. This is not a witch burning here.

What kind of books would you recommend? My school did have some variation in it's assigned books, but obviously a large portion were written by dead white guys.

Nope! Nonny is correct.

"Its" is possessive. "It's" is the contraction for it is.

Correct in their first sentence, yes. Correct in their last one? NOPE!
"[...] in it's assigned books" --> "in it is assigned books".
