In my AP Lit class my teacher would tell us 'here is the dead white guy I have to teach' and 'here is a comparative piece of lit' and we'd read both and compare. He didn't do it with every book so we wouldn't get overwhelmed and he had us for two years, but it was a good way for him to expand on what we were reading while keeping what he was assigned to teach us.
