No one ever ships best buddies together romantically. Famously so. Spock/Kirk, House/Wilson, and Sherlock/Watson are all really famous for the fact that no one ships them.

(I don't think anyone should be obligated to ship a certain way, but the idea that people don't ship a pairing exclusively because of the dynamic and race has nothing to do with it is exhausting when there's a million examples to the contrary. It's not a tenable argument)

anon you're replying to:

What I said was "Those are only my personal feelings however, and maybe someone else can make a romantic dynamic work." Like me personally, I don't ship it and am not sure how to. I give everybody else the freedom to ship it. What I was trying to say to OP is that it's fine if they don't specifically ship it either.

I found your comment totally clear and understandable. Not sure why ayrt decided to respond to some perceived argument you didn't make.

I don't mean to suggest that you personally are doing anything wrong.

dean/castiel, sheppard/mckay, face/murdock, steve/bucky, steve/tony(in the comics).

like no one ships best friends at all! it's so rare!

Yeah I'm really done pretending that there isn't a huge racial bias in fandom, I've been in it long enough to see how most interracial ships, but especially those involving black characters, get ignored, erased, and tossed aside for a white one.

And pointing at the few interracial ships that actually do get some kind of notice doesn't change the fact that a majority of them don't, even when the dynamics are the exact kind that would get oodles of content if it was two white guys(or guy/girl) instead.

DA

Definitely agree. My current favorite ship is black guy/white guy and I'm basically the only one that ships it. I mean, yeah, it's a small/obscure fandom, but of the fics that exist, they're all of two white guys who have almost no interaction and don't have nearly the same insanely slashable dynamic as the pairing I ship. I feel like if they were both white it'd be way more popular.

AYRT.

You have my sympathies anon, it's always frustrating to be into a WC/CoC ship and watch as it's ignored by nearly everyone, especially when all the attention is given to a white-character ship with less screen-time or development. Excuses are always made 'it's just not shippable/interesting' but it stops being believable after a while.

And hey people can like what they like, I'm not forcing people to stop, I'm just refusing to add to the lie that fandom as a whole doesn't have a race-issue.

You have my interest piqued somewhat about your ship, but if it's small I can fully understand you not wanting to out yourself.

Maybe. But in the specific case of JD/Cox their chemistry is completely and utterly unlike JD and Turk. Plus Turk and Carla were a phenomenal couple - one of the few interesting het couples on TV. I just feel like you can't make this specific case about race.

Lots of people ship best friend pairings. But also, the difference between the "best friend" vibe vs. the "bickering lovers" or "romantic tension" vibes have long been a fandom thing (see: Harry Potter fandom and the Ron/Hermione vs. Harry/Hermione ship wars). Lots of people are really turned off by the idea of shipping best friends.

the difference between the "best friend" vibe vs. the "bickering lovers" or "romantic tension" vibes

Hmmm, I'm having a hard time thinking of best friend ships that don't also fit the second category. Like, they're very clearly best friends but they also have the type of relationship where they're constantly giving each other a hard time, which fits into the whole "bickering lovers" thing, IMO (like the kind of dynamic where other characters describe them as "like an old married couple" because of the bickering).

IDK, maybe I'm not making sense, but to me there's not a super clear line between best friend and romantic tension because of that whole 'constantly bickering' sort of dynamic. Like, just romance vibes between characters who don't know each other very well or who aren't super close friends is definitely a thing, but I can't think of any examples of best friends who don't also have at least some degree of the bickering dynamic that long-time couples tend to have (and that can therefore be interpreted as romantic tension). Or maybe it just depends on the fandom, who knows.

Meanwhile Harry/Ron is almost non-existent even though they're two white guys who are best buddies. But sure, "best buddies" is always just an excuse not to ship a black guy.

i love how people will bring up the 1 or 2 times this happens with a pair of white dudes as some undisputed proof that friendship ships are just super unpopular, while ignoring all the white/non-white dynamics that are insanely unpopular despite having dynamics that fandom normally eats up. and i don't just mean friendShips, i mean rival dynamics, enemy trash-fire ships. the reality is if it has a non-white character in it, it's going to be substantially less popular than a white-counterpart, and i mean that for m/m, m/f AND f/f.
