So...is anyone else's family doing low key doomday prepping?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Or is it just people around me? My mother and my brother-in-law both brought up hoarding food/water today. They don't walk to each other so they thought it up independently.

I think that the reporting on the Coronavirus is causing some paranoia. The articles saying 'don't panic' along with the, like, four thousand articles reporting how quickly it is spreading, number of infected, and number of dead, seems somewhat contradictory. I don't think panicking helps, but it's really understandable to be scared when it looks like it might be a pandemic. So, while hoarding can cause problems, starting to stock up so that you have enough food for a couple of weeks is probably not a terrible idea.

Haven't heard of that. Are they concerned about the coronavirus? Or just assuming the world will continue its descent into hell?

Nope. But my family has never been panicky about this sort of thing (or anything in the news really).

Got a little sidetracked sorry;;

Because of the coronavirus? Or is there something else going on that I'm completely missing?
If we are talking about the virus then I don't see how stocking up is going to help much, this isn't some zombie apocalypse or nuclear war, a bomb shelter isn't going to help when the virus is quicker than you are at any rate.
Not that there's even any need of that in the first place, since people are recovering from it all the time. It's not as if everyone who catches it is dying.

I stopped paying attention to the mass paranoia of it all after I heard an ad in the commercial break of a hockey stream for a legitimate news station's podcast called 'Fear, and the Coronavirus'... Like it wasn't even pretending not to be hysterical about it.
Even today I overheard a conversation between a store manager and an old couple about how even the stores warehouses were completely sold out of face masks, that people were driving in from over an hour away to try and buy them. The virus isn't even airborne so while the mask could technically help, it isn't even how it's spreading. It's just manic.
Then I go to pick up my mom and one of her co-workers starts talking about how the same thing, and how worried she is that her sons university has a high population of transfer students from Asia... Like what the fuck?

I'm hearing about what's happening around the world to people who have any Asian heritage at all as if they're all some sort of harbinger of the virus, and it's just pathetic, racist, and horrible. It's so bloody typical that as soon as something bad happens people will take it as an excuse to validate their racism.

I just don't get it.

No one's stocking up because they think a bomb shelter will save them from the virus, wtf.

People who are stocking up are doing so because - whether it's reasonable or not - they're worried about city wide quarantines and civil unrest.

Not yet. My mom was watching the news all day and kept texting me at work to tell me about what they were saying. One of our local stations was apparently talking about how people need to stock up on food but were at the same time saying don't panic, at least not yet, so IDK. She wasn't running out and buying groceries or anything but I guess she was at least worried enough to pay attention to what they were saying.

No one I know well enough to have a friendly chat with is doing anything like that, and I’m glad because hot water and soap will be way better protection than a bunker full of food and ammo, at least if this is about coronavirus.

SA—okay, just heard about Pence being put in charge of the US handling of coronavirus, so maybe stockpiling food and meds isn’t a bad idea. What’s he gonna do, pray it away?

Do what they did with AIDS - assume everyone who gets sick is immoral and God's getting a head start on sorting them out.

AYRT—yeah, despite the flippancy in my last comment, I’d be afraid and angry but not surprised if that was the official response. I’m assuming that the people stockpiling or planning to stockpile food/supplies etc who weren’t already doomsday preppers were afraid of a possible curfew/quarantine, but idk.

I can't wait until one or more of their own gets ill. I can only hope they'll eat their own. (I can dream, can't I?)

Or since Pence has demonstrated that lives are expendable in the service of a political agenda, mass deportation of foreign nationals.

I've got a few face masks, but that's because I live with an 81-year-old whose body is still a bit worn out from a one-two punch of flu and heart surgery, and I'd rather not accidentally kill her by getting sick and not having a mask to wear to keep from spreading my crud.

I don't believe we're getting a pandemy and give into the paranoia but I figure that it can't hurt to have a pantry well-stocked.

Most people are going to get the corona virus. Most people won't die.
