I'm ace too, and I get where you're coming from. But I mostly see that argument against queer ships (mainly slash. I don't think most people can argue "why can't they be just gal pals" with a straight face) and ships with WoC. And they never mean "sex is not the only thing going on for romance, they could be ace too".

Possibly because a lot of the ops like that I see in tumblr are also acephobic too, lbr. They just don't like seeing anything queer validated in any way (and I often see them use arguments like "you can't headcanon that character as ace! they're [neurodivergent, a character of color, etc.], you're de-sexualizing them!" too. Even when the fans in question are ace AND those other traits too, and simply want to see themselves in their favorite characters, or as if there can't possibly be aces of color/neurodivergent or disabled aces etc. Not to say there aren't people that say "oh well, I JUST can't ship this because I headcanon them as aroace!" with every character of color in the way of their ships, because I've seen it, but those are outliers in my experience. But anyway, that's even more off-topic xD).
