I think part of the issue for a lot of people is how young the characters looked. They don't feel as if they're watching old people who've lived hundreds, possibly thousands of years feeling fulfilled and wanting a good death/the next step etc., but as young people throwing away their lives.

At least that's the feeling I'm getting from the fandom, especially people arguing that it portrays depression-related suicide. The characters couldn't have felt further from depressed to me, but I understand a lot of people interpreted it that way.

That is an important point, too -- I have my issues with the ending, but it's straight up said that they took thousands of Bearimys to get to the point of being "done".
