Probably because for them, the West is actually to the west and the East is actually to the east (as I am fairly certain these terms were coined in relation to England, but do NOT quote me on that or get on my case if I'm wrong).

I'm fairly certain France is considered part of "The West" and it's (south)east of England. Well...Parts of it are. Part of it are just south of England. Anyway, it's definitely not WEST of England. Someone on the XKCD feed suggested the terminology was centered in Rome, someone else suggested Jerusalem. No matter what, it's a Eurasia-centric system of terminology.

Because to a European "the East" is in fact to the east, and "the West" is to the west, I'd assume.
