Knowing that Novik is Astolat is always so weird to me.

I prefer not to know if authors have written fanfic and what that fanfic is, because I tend to look for fanfic trends in their writing. And that draws me out of the experience of reading an original book.

That is also why I avoid knowing the political leanings of authors ...

I was today years old when I learned this....oh my God.....I loved astolat, no wonder I loved the Temeraire books!

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough I never did finish the Temraire series. It just ... stopped being good and cohesive and it felt like it just wasn't going anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was cute world building but I stopped after the first book because it already felt like it was rather light on plot.

The first one read like one of those "young british gentleman and his faithful horse/dog/whatnot" stories to me, almost like a YA, which was weird, because the main character was an adult, and the feeling disappeared in later books. The series is uneven, that's for sure, but the moment she gave more space to the dragons characters, I was hooked forever.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree and i also kinda felt that way about some of her fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love when this happens!

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't get what people mean when they say they see fanfic trends in published works. If you don't mind me asking, do you actually see the book differently once you find out the author once wrote fanfiction? Or do your 'fanfic senses' start going off when you come across some of those trends? And what do you mean by tends?
(too many questions I know, I'm really just that curious since I have no idea what people mean when they say that;;)

I totally get the trouble politics though.

Not OP, but in this case, it definately makes me look differently at, for example, a very "slashy" scene between two male characters*, because I know that Novik knew perfectly well what slash fandom wil read into it and did it on purpose, which I'm in two minds about, because well, either do it or not do it. I'm not a great fan of "let's keep the character explicitly heterosexual on screen, but leave every door open for slash interpretation for fans if they want it". I'm not very angry about it or anything, and I don't even ship them really, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

*I'm talking about *that* scene from The Blood of Tyrants (if you know it, you know what I mean).

Oh god I’ve read Naomi Novik’s slash fic.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's an open secret, but given that Laura Hale as well as Cassandra Claire's coterie harassed NN by publicly linking her professional identity and her fannish one, and NN has gone out of her way not to have them publicly linked - this is a shitty thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Comment OP here, and I had no idea she was trying to keep them separate. Harassment by CC I’d totally believe, though, even if I have no clue who Laura Hale is. I love Naomi Novik’s published stuff and have never read her fanfic because I’m not big into slash, but it doesn’t seem to have hurt her pro career much that people know. Also I doubt FS has more than 400 readers on its best day, and of those, most probably don’t know or care about anything or anyone mentioned in my comment.

+1

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
OMG Laura Hale, I haven't about her in ages. I used to be friends with her, until she pulled the "I'll make cookies for anyone who causes wank to drive traffic to FandomHistory" a site about fandom, (think fanlore but even more evil regarding identity) she was trying to monetise.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
If Novik has "gone out of her way not to have them publicly linked", it's kind of silly of her to reblog her own book post from her Astolat tumblr. I'm sure that you'll be relieved to hear that OP hasn't actually done the shitty thing you've accused them of, and will be back shortly to apologize. ;)

She *used* to go out of her way to keep them unlinked, but not anymore. At some point in the past few years her preferences changed, and by this point she's been known to do the linking herself sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for making my comment into a secret, OP!

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever name she uses... highly over-rated. She lost me with AI RPS. Ick.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LMAO I saw that!

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
It mostly annoys me that she writes slash fic but straight (with the very occasional minor gay pairing) pro fic.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-05 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And dear lord, the smut in her het pro-fic is so, so bad. Like, ridiculously so.
