I loved Wen Qing. I'm not super into the fandom so I had no idea she was hated. She's gorgeous and I love her big ears. The only time I ever cared about her and Jiang Cheng was the time she staged the fight so she could tell him to go to Dafan Mountain. That was hot.

I think it was more a fear about her being introduced as a no-homo love interest for Wei Wuxian more than anything else. And yeah, I loved that scene. Jiang Cheng's growing incredulity as all his orders are mimicked by Wen Qing and the "Ohhhhh" of understanding once he figures out why she's doing it. I understand why they didn't necessarily take that all the way, but it would've been fun to see that ship more developed.

She isn't hated in the fandom at all. On the contrary, if you don't join in with the "yaaas slay queen" crowd when it comes to this character, you're the odd one out. The main conflict now is whether you think she's a major lesbian or not.
There was some controversy along the way because there were rumours that the actress' rich family had bought her the role and demanded it getting much bigger (female lead and LI for WWX) and the actress was harrassed for it - though mostly by the Chinese netizens. If there ever was any truth to those rumours remains unknown but it didn't turn out this way so /shrug

Idek where the lesbian thing came from (apart from the usual single female character who doesn't pine after a man). I mean, I don't super mind it but some ppl are really insistant?

I'm a little disturbed by your implication that the fans who harassed the actress aren't part of of fandom. Why? Because they were Chinese? You do know that this show (just like the novel and other adaptations) had/has a huge fandom following in China, right?
