......uh huh. Maybe in the comics, but in the movie(s), it's barely a thing beyond her name. Besides, she could be from anywhere, abducted by the Red Room - she could be Polish or Czech or hell, even Irish or something, if the RR were looking for very specific 'types' or were just opportunistically grabbing babies/small children.

I'm never pissed off at not seeing actual Russian actors playing Russians, but the fact that they NEVER DUB THEM ANYMORE drives me absolutely insane. I don't care how much you study, you cannot learn to speak unaccented Russian unless you were raised speaking it or spend years and years immersed in it (with the exception of some wunderpeople who can, I know they exist, but none of them are actors).

Russian is a vile beast of language to learn to pronounce and hearing non-speakers talk it phonetically and being expected to think they're fluent throws me so badly.

Especially watching stuff set during the cold war. I can't count how many times the "undercover spy in Russia" has spoken the kind of Russian that would get them shot in the head by the Babushka on the corner with a rifle.

+1, I don't care if they're not actually Russian, but I do care if they can't speak fluent Russian and you don't dub them.

That said, I'm friends with a professional opera singer and she can pronounce absolutely anything if she hears it first, spoken or sung, to the level that native speakers assume she can speak the language fluently rather than just say what she's learned phonetically. But that's a very specialist skill!

To take this secret seriously, I get it.

ScarJo has been cast in a number of roles where she doesn't necessarily "fit" what she's been given... Be it race, gender, or heritage- albeit, nothing on her, as this is her job, her livelihood, and she has to abide by her contracts, her reputation on skill. She is a great actress after all, and she will be hired because of that, because she does her job goddamn well..

By the character standpoint, yes, it would have been great if a Russian actress was cast. That is who the character is. ScarJo will do her best with what she has, but I'm afraid she's going to get dumped on just because of who's pulling the strings above her.

If Marvel had any sense they would do a reboot similar to how DC remained uptop before they jumped the gun to try and combat the Avengers. That way they can keep both the comic and the character alive without throwing either away before her prime.
