(Anonymous) 2020-03-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)I don't actually like to see people's houses or anything like that. I prefer natural landmarks and public places. I've been let into one place after it was closed to the public. The guy I was talking to about the history of the building knew the night security guy and we had a good time looking around without all the people. If people don't offer stuff like that, I don't ask.

It wasn't the safest thing in the world, while also not being a danger to life. It was just neglected and there were pigeons nesting in there. Anyway, I would always show people if they just got chatting to me about the building in general and weren't pushy because they'd heard about it. Those were my favourite kind of people. I don't know if all of them knew about it (it was an early 20thC swimming pool with changing cubicles surrounding it) but if they did they didn't let on or give the impression of expecting anything from me.

I studied history to post-grad so am a "trained" historian for all intents and purposes. First-hand accounts are precious, so I found it fascinating from that point of view. You don't know how much longer you're going to have witnesses of even the mid 20th century.
