OP

I don't actually like to see people's houses or anything like that. I prefer natural landmarks and public places. I've been let into one place after it was closed to the public. The guy I was talking to about the history of the building knew the night security guy and we had a good time looking around without all the people. If people don't offer stuff like that, I don't ask.

I used to work at a place that had an abandoned section attached that wasn't in a film or TV show, but it was a minor point of fascination for urban explorers.

It wasn't the safest thing in the world, while also not being a danger to life. It was just neglected and there were pigeons nesting in there. Anyway, I would always show people if they just got chatting to me about the building in general and weren't pushy because they'd heard about it. Those were my favourite kind of people. I don't know if all of them knew about it (it was an early 20thC swimming pool with changing cubicles surrounding it) but if they did they didn't let on or give the impression of expecting anything from me.

That's really cool! I love to get talking to people who know all the secrets of a place. I bet it was a great experience for the people you showed around!

It was really touching when I met someone who was old enough to remember using the place prior to it being abandoned. Naturally they were all on the elderly side but this fact meant many of them had a childhood where a bath was a once a week thing, and in this public building. It just made you appreciate what you have I suppose?

I studied history to post-grad so am a "trained" historian for all intents and purposes. First-hand accounts are precious, so I found it fascinating from that point of view. You don't know how much longer you're going to have witnesses of even the mid 20th century.
