See, I actually do think I could like this trope, but I just don't think I've ever seen it done well. I'm not knocking you on your interests, but I find most series tends to lean on desperation and emotion as an excuse rather than necessity.
I was just thinking about this via Tales of Symphonia just the other day. I haven't played it in forever but I was trying to remember if it went too far toeing the line between not allowing an unsanctioned sacrifice and risking sacrificing the world in order not to give destiny what it wants. Both of which I don't like seeing without a reason.

Ehh- Basically, I want to see a show use this trope as the last and final option. I find it selfish for a 'hero' to give their life up without exhausting any and every option in between.
I want to like it, it really is the ultimate sacrifice. I just wish there was more than just dying to the heros story, to know that they actually tried, I guess.
