143. You're not the only one. On LJ fandom usually doesn't care about those things (because most here are girls?) but as far as anime fandom is concerned, you can find discussion about directing and writing quite often on blogs, forums and even on 4chan far more often than you do on LJ.

I wouldn't really call that "fandom", though. Would you call "fandom" people that watch movies and books for their accomplished narrative and artistic qualities? Would you call fandom people that enjoy progressive music or determined art-movements?

[identity profile] hui-lai-lee.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit of and olschool scifi-fan on the inside, and yes, that fandom is pretty much about analyzing and talking about things on a different level than "oh my god Lockon x Tieria is so hot" or whatever pairing happens to rock your boat, and it's still collectively called a fandom (actually most scifi-folks I know don't consider anime to have a fandom since we lack serious discussion).

If you're passionate about something, I call myself a fan and collectively fans are a fandom. The ground on which the fandom is built can be artistic quality or cheap lulz or yaoi porn and it's still a fandom.

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What is serious discussion, though? To talk about directing, pacing, animators, writers, technical qualities and such details or the intricate details of content and real-world implications? Literature is a fandom?

[identity profile] hui-lai-lee.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
To be simple...

"I think character x is cool since they have red hair" is not very serious discussion
"I think character x is cool since they pull through from horrible things and still manage to hold their head up high" is somewhat serious
And when you pull academic terms into it and write essays then we're on the deep end on the sliding scale of seriousness.

I wouldn't call literature a fandom since it's too vague; "music" isn't a fandom either. Fandom also needs a close circle to work, and literature doesn't have the feeling of community. Individual works work better in terms of fandom. To go back to my previous definition, I haven't ever heard anyone say "I'm a fan of literature" but I have heard people say "I'm a fan of Narnia". The reason why general things like scifi and anime have fandoms is because they aren't mainstream things to enjoy like literature is, and so have a sense of community.

Er, this is the sort of thing I do seek out in (the mostly LJ-based) fandom. Maybe you've been looking on the wrong places? Also, some anime fandoms don't have much meta discussion, that's for sure, but analysing the source material is what (the largely female) Lj-fandom do. Just look at [livejournal.com profile] metafandom!

Anime is somewhat lacking, compared to other fandoms, but that's probably because the fans are generally younger.

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's not so much analyzing as it is discussing about more technical and artistic details within the material

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And you would prefer analysis on...?

[identity profile] 7thisgod.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom implies a sense of community and belonging, you mean?

(Anonymous) 2008-11-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's fair to say (or imply) that the majority of female fans don't care about analysis and serious discussion because they're female. Sure, a lot of females in fandom are shallow, but so are a lot of males in fandom, albeit in different ways. Men are as likely to argue over who's the hottest girl in a given series as women are over who's the hottest guy; men may be less likely to get involved in ship wars, but "who has the coolest robot?" or "who would win in a fight, Character A or Character B?" is hardly any more intellectual than "which couple is the best?"

I don't know, you probably didn't mean anything by the comment and I'm just being an oversensitive feminist, but... saying "LJ fandom doesn't discuss writing/directing/etc because most LJers are girls" edges a little close to "men like serious discussion while silly women just care about romance" for my tastes.
