Yeah, I know, it was just my immediate (irrational) reaction. I've heard absolutely nothing about it actually, besides the initial moaning when the remake was announced so I just assumed it went the way of Coupling or something. Alas, it's not showing in my country and I've been stretching my download limits as it is what with living in the arse end of the global television distribution market, but I might hunt down some extra reviews now and see if it's worth it. Do you know if they intend to stick mainly to the same overarching plot or are they going somewhere completely different with it like The Office (US)?

The first couple of episodes are close to the original but the writers are heading off in a different direction. For one thing, they have gone on record that they are taking a different ending than the UK!version. Sam is not in a coma. In the second episode, Sam is at a blackboard and he's come up with 12 possibilities as to why he is in 1973 with the 13th being the unknown. Here's a clip of the scene. For example, the writers did a different take on the episode where Sam must save everyone before 2 o'clock or the doctors will pull the plug on him in real life. In the US episode, they suggested he may be in a coma but he may be hallucinating the whole thing. The writers did this by staging the hostage hold up in the mental ward of the hospital. And one of the patients convinced Sam that she was an undercover reporter. The doctor told Sam that what she said is a fake. But that it is easy to be taken in by illusions. You can hear voices that are not even there. Think the very world around is not real.

And US!Gene is different from UK!Gene in that he is not the strongest one on the force and he's not the bully boy the UK!version is. He's the father figure for everyone. He sees the city as his and he, its knight. And anyone who crosses that line he will sic his dogs (men) on.

The US! writers are not even trying to do another Philip Glenister's Gene. They love that character too much.

And US!Sam is a big dork compared to UK!Sam who was simply neurotic.
