Weirdest restaurant experience

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-03-08 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My mother and I ate out with a friend today. I got potato soup. Ate half of it and it was delicious. Then I found a piece of plastic in a bite. TBH I wasn't that annoyed. I was just going to keep eating, but my mom insisted I stop and give them back the bowl. They didn't charge us for the bowl, but I therefore only got to eat half a bowl of soup. I would have happily paid for it to eat it all it was so good.

What has been your weirdest or most annoying restaurant experience?

Waiter wouldn't let my brother order a dish. Didn't say they were out of it, just said she didn't think he'd like it.

Stopped by a hole-in-the-wall restaurant I drive by on the way to work all the time. I went in, and there was nobody in the restaurant, behind the counter, or in the kitchen (that I could see). There was a bell on the counter, so I rang it. A man came out and took my order, and I paid then. I sat at a booth, and the same guy delivered my food after a few minutes, then went back in the back. Never saw anybody else in the restaurant the whole time I was there. :/

Finding stuff in your food is the worst, especially when you were enjoying it. Personally I can never continue if I do find something, especially hair. My appetite vanishes.

There was a burger place we used to go to a lot that has a couple of branches in our city. We always used one but were in the area of the sister restaurant when we were going to a gig so we used that one instead.

It was virtually empty, like there was only two tables with anyone on them and right away the waitress acted like she was looking for ways to put us off. She looked around like they were packed and she couldn't possibly seat us, huffing like "well, I'll see." Ok we didn't have a reservation but I want to point out this was definitely not one of those places. It was basically above fast food but around the level of a pub/bar.

We had to ask a couple of times for the menu. When our food arrived they didn't give us cutlery at first. Our drinks arrived after the food. By the time she brought over the mayo we'd asked for we'd nearly finished. My burger bun was burnt and the meat lukewarm.

Then we asked for the bill. Our original waitress had disappeared at this point but there was still loads of other wait staff wandering around and we must have asked a different person each time. It's not really a thing to go up and pay in a lot of places here unless it's an actual pub and sometimes you get told to sit back down if you do try. We had to ask for the bill at least three times. So we left them exact money. This isn't a culture where tipping is a massive part of wages but I still like to leave at least 10% for having had a nice time. This was just stressful and annoying. Part of me was tempted to walk out without paying but I just can't do that, I can't get over how it'd be effectively stealing.

We never had any of these issues with the other branch!

One time my mom and I were eating lunch at a chain restaurant. Hers came in a bowl that had dried food on the inside of it (that wasn't even part of what she'd ordered, so it was obvious that it wasn't cleaned thorougly) and also had an ingredient in it that wasn't supposed to be part of the dish. She told the waiter, they said they'd make her a new one. Brought it back out literally 10 seconds later, obviously having just wiped the dried food off, as there wasn't time to have made a new one.

She was getting kind of annoyed at that point because they clearly didn't clean it well, and who knows what could've been in the bowl aside from the dried food?

The waiter got argumentative with her, she asked for a manager, the manager came out and accused my mom of lying because his employee said they'd made a new one and there's no way the employee would've lied. My mom got even more pissed at that, at the idea that they would outright call a customer a liar, the manager told the employee to "deal with it" and stormed off, and the waiter actually yelled at us to "get the hell out of here and never come back".

A couple days later we went to a different location of the same restaurant, and my mom told a waitress there, who she was friendly with (it was close to my parents' house and they went there all the time) what had happened. She couldn't believe it, and said if she came back the next day, the owner (who owns all the franchises in the state) would be there and she could talk to him.

Went back when the owner was there, and he said there was no way the manager or waiter at the other location would've ever done that, and again accused my mom of lying.

We left and no one in our family went back for like 10 years. Just recently my parents have started eating there again, but my mom makes my dad go and get the food and bring it home because she refuses to step foot in the restaurant.

I went out to eat one time with a friend at this ritzy, expensive restaurant. We got all dressed up and were looking forward to eating there, but our waiter kept avoiding our table for some reason, was pretty rude when my friend asked him what he recommended, and we had to wait over an hour for our food (the restaurant wasn't even busy and there were only four other people there). We finally got our food and the presentation was beautiful, but it tasted kinda subpar and we couldn't figure out why the restaurant was so highly rated.

Went to lunch before a concert, and ordered stew - you know, food they would already have made, and only really need to heat and plate. 45 minutes later, I was served. Then on my way out, I got a raspberry friand from their cake case, only to discover when I got in the car that the raspberry friand... Contained no raspberries.

Went in to a Coco's during business hours (California chain), stood by the front desk for awhile waiting to be seated, no one seated inside the place at all, we hear voices from the back/kitchen, shout HELLO?, no answer, shout HELLO???? again, louder, still no answer, start getting annoyed and creeped out, wind up leaving, haven't been back to a Coco's since (and that one closed about a month later).

Not mine but my family's experience:
My uncle and aunt went to a restaurant and first the main waitress admonished them like little kids to hang up the jackets properly, then when they asked for salt, she said in this condescending tone "but you have to try the food first" like she was talking to a toddler.

And I once was at an Indian restaurant in Britain with my parents and the waiter just wouldn't bring my mother a pint. She kept getting half pints only the whole evening even though she clarified it several times. I think after a while, the waiter caught on and basically made a joke out of it but it was weird.

Occasional songs.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-08 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any songs that you only go back to every once in a while because at some point you listened to them all the time and kind of got burned out on them?

Brought to you by Till I Hear from You by the Gin Blossoms, which I felt the need to listen to yesterday and probably won't listen to again for a couple of years. Honorable mention to Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger.

There was a radio at work the summer Somebody I Used to Know was a hit. They played that song once per hour, so I heard it 8 times per day for about a month.

I'll never have to listen to that song again.

I don't think I have any music like this. I definitely go through phases of listening to a song more, or less, but I'm not sure I've ever really burnt out on a song I like.

Till I Hear It From You is great! That and Hey Jealousy.

I haven't had that but I've had the opposite when I haven't heard a song in so long that I forgot how much I liked it till I heard it again.

I heard Sir Sly's &Run today. I hadn't heard that in awhile and used to listen to it a few times a day when it first came out a couple years ago.

Oh I'm counting all the numbers
Between zero and one
Happy but a little lost
Well I don't know what I don't know
So I'll kick my shoes off and run

Medical question

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-03-08 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been having some jaw pain and some ear pain that I suspect is caused by the jaw pain. I'm suspecting TMJ. The thing is, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to talk to my dentist about this or see a doctor, or both. Does anyone know?

Re: Medical question

(Anonymous) 2020-03-08 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Regular doctor. There's not much dentists can do for TMJ, while a primary care doctor can recommend physical therapy, which sounds weird but can actually help a lot.

(Have TMJ/also work for physical therapy practice.)

Re: Medical question

(Anonymous) 2020-03-08 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Regular doctor to rule out other causes, though you can certainly mention what you think is the cause of the ear pain. If your regular doctor thinks it's something else, he/she can always refer you to a specialist.

I needed a night guard with my jaw/ear combination, but I just got tinnitus from clenching my jaw, not pain.

That feel when a friend posts the last chapter in their long-fic and it is unbelievably, irredeemably awful. Like ‘makes-GoT-s8-look-like-a-masterpiece’ awful. Awful like AWFUL. WHAT DO YOU EVEN DO IN THAT SITUATION aside from keyboard-smash and pretend to have died/change your username

Re: RIP

(Anonymous) 2020-03-08 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm lucky, in a way. I had a friend who intentionally posted hilariously awful endings (think big meteors blowing up the planet) because they were so frustrated with the direction of the story that they gave up.

But I worry that means that I wasn't exactly all that invested in the story in the first place.

Conflicted about a story (writing thread)

(Anonymous) 2020-03-08 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an RPF pairing I've really been wanting to write about, but I can't get over feeling like it's disrespectful to their RL partners/kids. Of course, I would never do anything insane like tweet it at them or anything, but still.

At first my solution was to instead write original fic with characters based on them (an idea I liked because I could incorporate an idea I'd had for awhile for an original fic). I've already written a bit of it and have gotten used to the names I've given the OC versions of them, but lately I've felt like they're too similar and it's too obvious who they're based on.

Now I'm debating changing some details so it's less obvious, but I'm not sure there's a point. I'm really still in the beginning stages of this story, and it's not like I'm planning on trying to get it published or anything. I was thinking of posting it on AO3 when it's finished, but I don't know that original fic is really a thing on there, so now I'm wondering if I should just rework some of it and make it fanfic after all (and use the idea I'd had for original fic that I mentioned above in a different story).

So I don't know...does anyone have any suggestions?

Feel free to share any thoughts or questions you have on things you're working on!
