i can agree with this tbh, i'd rather the writers focus on telling a story than shoving random tits or dick into the scene, as if my attention is gonna wain if i'm not half-turned on all the time.

This, this, so much this. And it's so *obvious* when it's there for titillation and attention-grabbing (of a certain demographic). Everyone in this firefight is in layers of camo and vests and jackets and etc..... Except for Ass!kicking!Bad!Ass!Chick!!!! who is in short shorts and a cami top.

Uh huh.

That example doesn't seem particularly relevant to the secret, though, which is addressing equal opportunity nudity in media.

Did you not read the secret? They talked about how they don't like it when the nudity is 'gratuitous' and 'clearly just to titillate'.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-11 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I very much agree.

Personally, nudity doesn't really do anything for me. Scenes with nudity can be hot, but the nudity itself isn't something that makes a scene hot for me.

I do appreciate more mundane instances of nudity when it's simply realistic for the character to be naked, though.

I really disagree! Although it depends a lot on the tone of the series, I don't have a problem with things being titillating and pulpy and outrageous to get your attention, I think it's fun and more things should embrace it. And I also like seeing nudity.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Same. The shows I like are really nonstop over-the-top.

DA

Well, that's what porn is for not primetime television where storylines are more important than the time it takes to take your pants off.

And there are porn parodies of a lot of things. TBH those are a guilty pleasure of mine. But you can find porn that combines this thing you like with naked people.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... yeah, but the porn aspect is really the primary function of those things, right?

Sure, but if lots of nudity even in places it interferes with the plot is what you want, then porn is your best bet.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's a completely arbitrary division and I reject it. I don't care about it. You can have things with storylines and also porn. For God's sake, people in fandom should at least know this.

I'm not saying that this should be the case on primetime television (age restrictions on adult content is an entirely different discussion) but I think it's ridiculous and prudish to say that a TV show for adults can't have nudity, including sexy nudity.

I don't think anyone is saying no nudity ever. But there is a place for it. It can enhance a scene and it can also detract. And these days it often is used excessively and in ways that interfere with the plot rather than intelligently to enhance the scene and the plot. It is used just to titillate straight male viewers.

I definitely agree with this, especially the "gratuitous" part.

Related, I had to re-evaluate my stance on gore when I watched Black Sails. I used to dislike all graphic depictions of realistic-looking wounds but in Black Sails they actually served a purpose, namely setting the stakes. Knowing and getting a feeling for what what a cannon can do helps to understand the plot, where the number of cannons a party has is an important resource. That was the first time I really got that gore can serve a narrative purpose instead of just being there for shock value or drama. On top of my head, I can't think of a show or movie that has used nudity like that (but that's probably because I don't watch shows where the plot might warrant it).

I noped out of Black Sails as soon as we got Blackbeard.

I agree when it is gratuitous. Random nudity that is out of place is not cool. But I do like nudity when it fits in with the scene. And as a bi woman I do want it to be more equal (and filmed more equal too because even when we get male nudity, often the focus is still on the woman and the two are filmed differently). I like naked bodies, and in the right place nudity can enhance a scene. But on the other hand, out of place nudity can ruin a scene and if people have porn so they really don't need excessive nudity in everything.

I agree with this on many levels. Especially because gratuitous fan service can be a detriment/distracting at points. Like I can’t tell you how many pieces of media I skipped out on because of how distracting the nudity or whatever could be.

And on a personal note, while I’m all for male nudity I’m conversely not because. God I can’t think of anything less appealing than a naked dick. They are just not aesthetically pleasing at all to me and I really don’t want to know what Hollywood’s flavor of the month’s dick looks like. I’m all for butts tho.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I definitely agree with you, OP! Naked boobs are nice, but I don't need them shoved in my face every ten minutes.

Yeah I don't mind when there's a point to it other than 'the show creators thought it was hot', but there's few examples I can think of when nudity wouldn't fall under that category in my mind (except in comedy). But I'm asexual and just not big on nudity in general so it's pretty rare that a scene with nudity DOESN'T read as 'gratuitous' to me.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I dislike gratuitous nudity and it’s so overwhelmingly often of females that it just sort of feels like a constant reminder that no matter what purpose the character serves to the plot, if there are females present, they’re Really only there for us to see naked and think of F***ing. It just bums me out and I usually wander off to other shows/movies/whatever.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I theoretically support equal-opportunity nudity... but I don't like looking at dicks. I just don't like them. :/

You and me are very different people.

Frankly I want MORE gratuitous nudity.

(Anonymous) 2020-03-12 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
100% agreed.
