What are those myriad reasons why female characters are, almost across the board, less popular in fandom?

First of all, I'd like a statistic that proves they actually are less popular across the board. Because that feels like a vast overexaggeration based on your personal feelings.
And there are plenty of reasons. Some are already here in this thread and you'll plenty more if you actually look for it. Are some of them based in internalized misogyny? Probably. But to pretend that that's more or less the only reason why a woman might not care about female characters is not just wrong, it's also doing women a huge disservice.

How on earth can one find a statistic for that that meets your standard?
