Well, yeah, if you don't like the source material (by which I mean the comic), you're clearly not going to care about the movie being unfaithful to the comic, even though the comic was ultimately doing much more interesting things.

Me too! I think knowing the "players" (characters) and hearing them think about how important the game is to them has a lot to do with it. The dramatic sound effects and camera angles help too.

I'm not particular bothered by fridging when it involves a male character fridged for a female character's story. Fridging is only a problem because it used to be overwhelmingly female characters who were killed to give male characters sympathetic backstories, and often those women weren't even given backstories or characterization themselves. Fridging can be a useful plot device and doesn't need to be completely done away with. In this case, both Hugh and Icheb have backgrounds and characterizations, so it isn't like they've never been used in stories before and were just created to be fridged. So I don't really see the problem.
