140. You know, I really want to like Maiko. The way it was at the end, it even made me smile, and I thought, if it were a ship I could enjoy, that I would've really liked that. And I admit that towards the end, they do things that are really powerful.

But it just doesn't work. Try as hard as I can, nothing will ever make me forget that when Mai was introduced, she was a one-dimensional character, or else she was almost as bad as Azula. She didn't give two craps if her little baby brother lived or died. She didn't care about her family, and honestly, we have no evidence that they're not a good family--they seemed like nice enough people (well, except for being Fire Nation nobility/soldier-types). For the entire first season, as far as I saw, Mai had no real personality aside from a joke. And that was funny. But imagining her as a human being who's actually capable of emotions and still acted as bland as she did for everything in the world except this one guy she had a crush on? That's creepy.

If I can seperate Season 2 Mai and Season 3 Mai into two different people, I can almost enjoy Zuko/Mai.

For the record, since I do like Zutara, I should mention that I have no such qualms with Aang/Katara, and thought they were just cute as pie.

I always thought of Mai/Zuko as a joke. Not a bad joke, mind you. It was kind of like, "Look at us angsty teens in our angsty love" and poking fun at that. I liked it; it was funny. And I always thought of Mai as a kind of caricature of that too.

I like Mai/Zuko in that sense because they're just...loyal. Not as cute as Aang/Katara, and not as sexy and adorable and super awesome as Suki/Sokka (is my OTP showing?) but I liked the fact that even though Zuko kind of up and left her, she still stood by his side and helped him at the end. At that part I guess it stopped being a caricature. I wouldnt' say that the relationship is the best developed, but in my point of view, you could pull deep out of there.

But tttly, Aang/Katara is the cutest thing ever, isn't it? :)

I could go with them as a joke. When you had that whole "You're so beautiful when you hate the world" thing, I groaned, but I figured that if the relationship ended for good, it would just be for hilarity. But if the relationship were real, it would just be stupid.

Thing is, I don't think there should have been joke-relationships in Avatar. All the relationships (in a mostly platonic sense now) between the characters came off as realistic, so a joke one just seemed to...damage it all somehow. And by the end, yeah, it could be deep. But that's the thing--given Mai's actions all throughout the second season, I can't accept her as more than a caricature. It's not a matter of character development. It's that anyone who's capable of being anything more than a self-absorbed sociopath shouldn't've acted that way unless it was "Excused by Hilarity"--which doesn't work unless the character's not real.
