ONE FORTY

Okay... what series did you watch?

I don't have a thing against Maiko, honestly I think the ship is pretty cute, but I feel that it's beginnings were just THROWN the into the series with no warning or explanation beyond a perceived childhood crush of Mai's from BEFORE URSA LEFT (which was what, seven or eight years prior to the series canon?) that Zuko showed no signs of reciprocating when he was little.

There was no indication of anything between then aside from a decade-old one-sided crush until the start of season three when WHAM, out of nowhere they are kissing and acting like they've been together for ages?

I don't disagree that their story and all the cute awkward bits and further development of their relationship was well-handled once it had been introduced, but it still came out of nowhere at the kick-off and I just don't and can't consider that good-development.

It blindsided most people and I think that the piss-poor start is part of why so many people dislike the ship and consider it a bad match. =/

Have you read the comic that takes place between season two and three? It pretty much settles that 'leap' showing the development up to it.

I haven't read that no, I'll have to try to find it!

But either way if they left needed exposition on the development of their relationship as an aside in a comic that not everyone has had access to that strikes me as kind of bad storytelling in a way.

Just... why not have made some kind of room for lead-up in the body of the series? There were at least a few episodes of filler in early season three that could have been cut for better character development on Mai and Zuko. I would have wanted to watch that alot more than The Headband or the Painted Lady.

*sigh* Oh Avatar, can't live with you, can't live without you. :p

I think the piss-poor start is mostly just an excuse. Look at the way they reacted to Zuko's date with Jin before it was even aired, if you don't believe me.

Oh god, I'm not counting rabid Zutara fans when I talk about people who disliked Maiko! XD Anybody who flipped their lid based on their love for another pairing, especially without actually watching the episodes first, can go stuff it.

For the record, I'm a rabid Zutaran, and I still totally loved Jin and was hoping that, as Zutara looked increasinly unlikely, Zuko would somehow wind up with her again. The little lamp scene is still one of my favourite warm-and-fuzzy moments.

Piss poor start is the definition of avatar.

Jin, for one. Which was shit. Jet was barely there before Katara went all blushy and gush gush HE IS SO AWESOME. Haru too. Everything in avatar is uprupt, some things are NEVER explained without the comics. We're still given mysteries today. The piss poor 'start' is hardly an excuse for anything, considering that everything else was done in some way shape or form, worse. Sokka and Suki had some nice development, but it went from a certain awkward step in season two to suddenly there's no issue no side step and it's all settled, without anything to make their relationship whole from that part again, it's as if Yue was just being overcome, Sokka obviously still thinks about it (Boiling Rock) but he just FORGETS IT the next episode- which doesn't make much sense to me.

Let's also not forget the Katara Aang thing felt a little confusing- and I like Kataang. It was from one minute utter confusion and nothing felt like it was tying that.

What does Maiko have other than a shitty start? It has rocky starts based on the characters themselves (The Beach) it has development that shows the characters can grow and get along (Nightmares and Daydreams) it shows that Zuko is mature enough to realize he can't be selfish and bring Mai into something no matter how much he loves her (Day of black sun right?) It shows that Mai is hurt and obviously loves him but is able to forgive him so that they can be together. (boiling rock again) And most importantly it shows that these two can go through trials, tribulations, hurt, suffering, and extreme metamorphosis and still love each other for well- EACH OTHER. (The ending (Avatar Aang)

I expressly said that Mai and Zuko was handled well after it's start off (and you're right, it really was) but the 'out of nowhere' start still left me grasping for foundation for all their good development was all and I enjoyed the pairing much less than I could have as a result.

Although, all told and exposed as your comment shows, I think we're probably kind of asking a lot of depth from an already uniquely deep tv show geared at 8-11 year olds.

*sigh* Oh Avatar...

But if you're asking from it from Maiko...how can you expect me not to ask from it in the other ships in return :\ If people want to say one thing is mature and then go WELL MAIKO FAILS HERE well ZUTARA FAILS HERE KATAANG FAILS HERE SUKKA FAILS HERE AND HERE AS WELL they all fail somewhere and the 12 year old thing. is a good explanation why >_>

Re: ONE FORTY

[identity profile] sparklemagpie.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I just meant that you're correct in that all of the ships fail somewhere. I never said anything about how I felt about other ships, just that I felt Maiko came out of nowhere and that that spoiled it's otherwise fairly good development for me.

And all in all, my enjoyment is probably more spoiled by my expectations for a good story than by any real problem on the part of the writers. I should just expect that nothing will be really adequately explained I suppose. =/

Re: ONE FORTY

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I thought Jin's thing was absolutely believable, because hey, I've seen it happen. Girl noticed guy at tea/coffee shop is kind of cute. Starts to make it part of her daily routine to go there. Finally works up the courage to ask him out. ("Taylor the Latte Boy" anyone?) Then, in Zuko and Jin's case, they have an awkward first date, and he does something nice for her because it's probably the first time since those hormones kicked in that he felt like a normal 16-year-old-kid, and knowing someone actually finds you attractive and desireable...well, it's a pretty heady drug that first time 'round.

It's not just the crap start that bugs me for their relationship. It's Mai's start in general. I loved her when introduced, but that was because I thought her character was pure, unrealistic comic relief. Suddenly throwing in a relationship that (after some hideous lines) did develop into something deep...it doesn't gel with Mai-as-introduced, and I didn't see anything of her personal growth to make me believe it was the character development kicking in.

Their ending was cute, but I just can't follow.
