Ha, I've never come across someone else who didn't like Dune. I think for me it was the fact that Herbert seemed to be completely sucked in by the worlds he created to the detriment of the actual plot. That, and I found it as confusing as fuck. Never seen the movie though, I think I may have to now.

OH YES! that's what happened. he was all focused on the world he made he populated it with stereotypes. i never got why it was such a massive cult hit. the movie is crazy awesome in it's badness, it is to space opera what plan 9 is to horror movies. check it out.

I guess it probably because of the worlds. I can't deny that they were pretty amazing, I mean he created whole economic systems from scratch, but as great as that is, it's not primarily what I'm looking for in a novel. Also, the whole one boy with a great destiny thing is damn tired now. I might be renting the movie soon though.

exactly! y'know, if he had come up with the setting, all the places and details and setting, and someone else was in charge of the characters and dialogue, i would have liked it a lot more. at the very least, couldn't some editor gone through and cut all the "ah-h-h-h"'s? they were annoying. but the movie is very worthy. someone spent a huge amount of time on the props and costumes.
