... But male characters from Japanese series are referred to as "megane." Just like characters with spikey personalities that have hidden woobie underneath are called tsundere, and the girls who start out sweet and innocent and loving and turn out completely nutzoid psycho violent by the end are called yandere. It's just a term...?

It's stupid weeaboo bullshit. "Megane" means glasses. All the term tells you about a character is that they wear glasses. Why the hell would the term "glasses" fall short of conveying the same thing as "Megane?"
