can i respectfully disagree? i only read the first dune novel, and while the plotting and scope are impressive, the dialogue and characterisations left me cold. i didn't hate it or love it. i thought the movie, a departure from the admirable intricacies of the original and plagued with lousy production values, was just plain silly. and c'mon. that arms akimbo and metal loincloth is slightly hilarious.

I think perhaps our disagreement on the novels is just personal taste. I didn't find the characters to be stiff or cold. I actually came to care greatly for some of them throughout the novels. However, the thing about Dune is that it takes place on so grand a scale and covers so many years that most of the characters aren't around for the entire length of the series. Another thought to consider is that I've read the novels twice. Once when I was in high school and then again six years later, so it may just be that I've spent more time with the material and grown to love it in that time.

As for the movie--I've found that one either loves or hates David Lynch. While his version muddles or does away with some of the specific details of the novel, it retains the spirit and tone of the piece. The SciFi Channel did a miniseries not long ago based on the novels, and while it made use of the specific details and was much more faithful to the original, it lost the atmosphere--the mood--of the story. I'm not going to argue that there aren't any weak points to Lynch's 1980's adaptation--because there most certainly are--but on the whole I found that film to be far more entertaining and worthwhile than any word-for-word reenactment of the novels that SciFi attempted.

absolutely an issue of personal taste. among other things, i had to read dune at school. studying and dissecting the text can only increase my antipathy toward it. herbert's thinly veiled prejudice against homosexuality didn't help.

stuff like mulholland drove and eraserhead frustrate me more then anything else. but i agree the mood, the delicate sense of jamais vous, familiar yet new and strange, that i think is behind dune's success, was present in the film. none of this literary debate, however, will make sting in metallic underpants any less hilarious in my eyes.
