108. You have a kindred spirit in me. Seriously. I haven't seen The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and all those other 3-D movies out of silent protest. They did classic animation with the animated portions of Enchanted, they can do it with everything else. Fuck Pixar.

145. Any specific animes that apply to this? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm honestly curious. I don't know any animes where they keep the original music except DBZ.

Most anime dubbed today keep the original music.

Pixar's an entirely different fucking company. You don't have to choose between one or the other, for christ's sake, it's a false dichotomy. Not seeing Pixar movies out of silent protest is just stupid and denying yourself the ability to see new kinds of animation that are also interesting.

Pixar and Disney work together on animated films now, and before that, Pixar was a rival company which was making more money in the Box Office, so Disney bought the company and started makiing animated films the way Pixar did.

Disney owns Pixar, but they also basically let Pixar do what they want. They know Pixar makes money and they've stated that they're not going to try to fuck with a winning formula.

Yes, I know when it comes down to it, money beats everything else. But just because a formula is winning doesn't automatically make it the best one.

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that while Disney now owns Pixar, the projects are still kept pretty separate.

ALSO, the president of Pixar, John Lasseter? He's now a bigwig in Disney thanks to the buyout--and HE'S the main reason traditional animation is coming BACK to the company. He's been pushing for it since he was hired, because he's a fan of traditional animation. For example, the recent National Treasure sequel was screened in theaters with a theatrical animated Goofy short, like old movies used to do. The guy responsible for that? Lasseter.

So yeah. Pixar is not the enemy of traditional animation--and the guy behind the company is even a champion of it. It's not his fault Eisner was a nut (and thankfully, he's gone!)

Disney does their own 3D movies that have nothing to do with Pixar, so clearly, Pixar still stands relatively alone production-wise. In fact, I have a feeling part of the reason they agreed to be bought out was so they could keep making the bigger budget movies, which puts Disney in almost more of a producer/financier role. I could be totally wrong, but that's how it seems.

And John Lasseter is the win. SRSLY.

For specific examples, though, Fullmetal Alchemist and Kyou Kara Maou? Almost anything that has the option to watch it in Japanese retains the original music. The volume may have been changed in some parts in order to hear the voice overs but for the most part it's all the same.

You're really missing out then. The stories in those movies are absolutely beautiful, and so is the animation. I don't watch the Disney 3D movies, but I do watch the Pixar ones. (Like Bolt, The Wild, Meet the Robinsons, etc.)

I'm a huge fan of traditional animation, (that's what I'm interested in doing as a career), but I think Pixar is the one 3D animation company that gets it right.

I really suggest you watch one. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

Agh, I meant to say I DON'T watch Bolt and all those Disney ones.
I DO watch Pixar stuff.

Meet the Robinsons was actually a pretty amazing movie. I typically don't like the Disney 3D films but I actually liked that one more than the Pixar films.

[identity profile] tommytonebender.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Hmmm, I haven't seen that one yet. People have been telling me it's good... maybe I'll check it out.

Re: 108

[identity profile] tenmorehours.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was as good as Pixar's stuff, but Meet the Robinsons was actually a fun movie. The designs in it really reminded me of the quirky feel of Tomorrowland, too. I was pleasantly surprised with it. So I'd encourage you to see it.

...That being said, I'm not going to go see Bolt in theaters unless I hear really, really good things about it. I definitely want traditional animation back, even if i consider myself a fan of Pixar.
