145. THIS. Nowadays there are so many perfectly good (and sometimes very much superior) dubs, that having people give the whole dubbing community a general "It all sucks," makes me wonder if these people had lobotomies. Seriously, folks. Since the majority (notice I didn't write "all") of the sub elitists aren't even fluent in the language they prefer, how do they even know they're listening to good acting?

I can't comment on the quality of the dubs (not American), but I have to take issue with the second half of your statement. I watch films in foreign languages all the time, and it's perfectly easy to know whether the acting is good, even if you don't understand the words. You can still hear the feeling in the voices, the delivery, and the timing. Plus, there's a translation right there in the subtitles!

Except that you don't really know the delivery, because you're not fluent in the language, and don't understand how it's supposed to sound depending on what they're saying. I remember my grandmother watching Italian films. And while I thought the acting was perfectly fine, she'd point out the over or under acting in a heartbeat. And no, she wasn't picky. She just knew her mother tongue, and therefore had a much better understanding of what she was seeing/hearing.

Maybe you just have a bad ear for nuance? I don't know, I've never heard that complaint for foreign films, and we never dub them, unless they're mainly aimed at the younger than ten age group (like for example the Disney films; then there's usually two versions, one dubbed and one subtitled). My own mother (age 55) refuses to watch the Ghibli films in anything but the original language, and she definitely can't speak Japanese!

What you've got to do is mainly to get used to the sound of the language. It doesn't matter if you can't understand the words, as long as you've caught the "rythm", so to speak. Thanks to the subtitles you know what they're saying, and the cadence, the feeling in the delivery, and many other things found in the voice performance will tell you the rest.
