101) The need for closure is one of the most painfully intense emotions there is. I hope you and your relatives find some peace soon.

119) Sporking is evil fun -- but only if taken in a not serious way, with a memory that everyone goes through a period when their writing is naive and they fall into common cliches and other logical traps. This is why I find most sporks to be boring as sin -- they are making fun of the mediocre rather than the truly amusingly bad. If a fic is full of errors that anyone can make it's just not worthy of being sporked.

123) 1/10

136) Well they got to all live together virtually on the moon, so there was a bit of a happy ending there.

138) Let the n00bs go! Their reasons for watching were paper thin to start off with. There are plenty of us left who enjoy the whole show, and happily watch all the Doctors incarnations. Besides, the next doctor will pick up another crop of fly-by-night fans who insist that 11 is the only doctor who really matters.

142) Hey, if a Coca-cola commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mOEU87SBTU) can turn into a beloved peace anthem, an olympic song can be a rally cry for (or against) Prop 8.

147) I just think, "In ten years those are going to be hanging around her knees."

Agreed, about the not being so serious thing. I used to be into sporking, but I'm not anymore precisely because I got sick of the attitude most people had about it: The sporking of the merely mediocre gets old (and sometimes I find I sometimes actually like sometimes.... I do seek out and read cheesy fics on occasion because I find myself "in the mood for cliche' cheese" rather than the usual "makes me think" fare - and I don't like being condemmed for that). Also, there's the uber-serious attitude a lot of people get, where they're acting like the author of a fic they're making fun of is a horrible, horrible person who should have their writing hand cut off/burn in hell/is tainting the fandom/should never have been born, etc.

I've run into both kinds. I used to have friends of mine give my old fanfics the MSTK treatment - I used to be in a fandom that did that and it was all done in a spirit of fun and humor... then I hung out with the "serious sporkers" for a while, and... ugh.

If you know places where it's all done with a spirit of fun, the authors are not condemned and nothing is taken seriously, I may want to check it out - but I've come to avoid any "spork" community anymore preciesly because I've had my fill of the other attitude and it seems like that's all there is these days?

Yeah, that's the same conclusion I came to, which is why I don't bother with them anymore. Oh I might check out a MST every once and a while, because if someone's going to go through that much work to spork, they usually pick an author who has taken logic off in a new, unique, and memorably improbable way. But sporking a fic simply because there's a Sue in it? Meh.

GAFF used to have a section called the "Golden Oldies" which was a collection of the very "best" of the worst fics. That was worth reading through, but the day to day GAFF fodder was mostly pretty dull. I got to the point where I was just reading the writing discussion forums and arguing with the "Canon pairings are the only good and right pairings" screamers.

I gave up on the GAFF like, three years ago. I'm sure they still hate me over there for some socio-political opinions I had back then that I *don't even have anymore,* if any of the old farts remember me at all. Oh, and the fighting, yes. And me being a bitch.

I know what you mean, though. The Golden Oldies section was great - there was some truly, truly awful stuff there that was hilarious - and I get the feeling that it was posted in the spirit of "the authors themselves are probably laughing at this stuff, too, now." And I used to like disscussing writing theory over in one of the disscussion areas, but it really got to be just... the "cooler than thou because I hate this" contest or something.

And the New Releases... aside from "shred the author over a typo" it just got boring, repetative.

Then again, I'm going by three-four years ago. Maybe it's gotten better, but I've not been bothered to look.

I'm not much for pairings myself, period. My strengths lie in being a gen-ficcer, but any/almost any pairing can make a good fic if one works it out right. "What if?" is the magic of writing.

I'm the very definition of what a large number of GAFF regulars think as a badficcer: I write crack, rareships, and smut -- and whenever possible all three at the same time. I do it for the challenge and the fun of it. For me that's the ultimate in writing: being able to make the preposterous reasonable and the unsavory, hot.

I moved away from them, because I was depressed and I realized the fighting was just making me more depressed. One day I realized I wasn't having any fun on GAFF anymore, and why the hell was I there? So I stopped bothering to check in.
