See, I usually see RPing as a Fun Hobby. It can also be a great way to do something fun and creative with friends!

Nobody is "pretending to be" an anime character on the internet as in... thinking they are them. Or if they are, the RP community in general feels pretty weird about that, actually -- there's a huge emphasis in every online games to remember the difference between IC and OOC.

Instead, it's a melding of traditional OC-based RP (which is basically group improv with pre-defined rules to keep any one improv'd character from ruling the game) with fanfiction elements. So the "pretending to be an anime character online" is ... really just an interactive fandom hobby.

Yeah, there are people who take it too seriously, and yeah, there are people who really believe it. But although they might be loud? They're seriously not the core of the RP hobby, and I think a lot of people would be surprised that people would think they are.

I... am really not sure what to say to this, because "all RPers are otakukin" was not my point at all, and although I've realized by now that my secret was poorly-worded (and I may not have done the best job of explaining myself in comments) it didn't begin to occur to me that anyone would take it that way.

Actually, I was responding based on reading all the comments, and you having repeatedly said that you thought rpers were weird for "pretending to be anime characters" and that they all seemed horribly drama-laden? Which are the things I addressed in my reply, rather than the maturity level thing.

Okay, apparently I'm even worse at making my point than I thought, because what I was trying to get at was just the drama-laden-ness, really. I mean, I do think it's kind of a silly hobby, but there's nothing wrong with having silly hobbies so long as one realizes that's what they are.
