Persona MCs are a lot easier to ship when you interpret “switching personas” as a characterization thing as well as a gameplay thing. If they radically change how they present themselves depending on who they’re talking to, that in and of itself is a personality trait, and it allows for an easy hook where you can ship them with someone who makes them feel like they don’t have to play a specific part in order to be loved. (This is why I like Joker/Chihaya. Chihaya also has issues with having to play a part in order to avoid being hated and scorned.)

I always liked this take personally. I always got a kick out of how the character must act whenever Mara was equipped. Plus it's an actually canon fact that social links develop quicker when the MC has a like tarot equipped to the link, so it does check out.

Besides 'silent protagonist' is a valid personality type as far as I'm concerned.

You mean Byleth, right? Because agreed, fuck shipping Byleth.

I mostly agree. The only characters I liked Byleth with were Edelgard and Seteth. I chose Flayn and Sothis to see how cringey it was (it was) and Hanneman because he's my favorite character. Honestly the paired Byleth ending I liked the most was the Crimson Flower Alois ending.

I agree completely, like I hate it so much when people use characters as self-inserts. Though I have a much bigger problem with the 'fandom bicycle' types (like Hermione for instance) since every interpretation of them seem to be completely inaccurate and much harder to sift through than these particular video game protagonists. (I totally get what you mean I guess is what I'm trying to say...)

I might just have a lot more experience with what to look for with them tbh, I know to avoid most all of the anime/dance/golden/extended versions of the Persona series games. Plus all the fics tagged with later names the series gave them. (aka Yu over Souji) I do believe silent protagonist is a valid character type though, so that probably makes a difference...
With FE I completely agree finding it impossible to ship the early player characters, like the Tactician for one. I disagree so far as Ike goes, since he's given such a distinct personality I can't imagine not shipping him with people/being referenced in fics with those he's close to. I haven't played a FE game since Radiant Dawn, so I'm not even sure if they reinstated supports as proper relationships like they were in previous games, but supports were a huge thing for me and the context for my ships.

I know an unfortunate amount of people still use these characters as self-inserts, but I find them a lot less threatening than the 'relatable' characters who people think they know so much about but ultimately not via wishful thinking or whatever else.

I kinda agree. I think the Persona MCs have more personality so it’s a little easier to read about Minato/Souji/Akira ships, especially because they tend to get a few universally agreed characterizations or consistent variations. But Byleth is boring and about as interesting as a wooden block. Tbh, I also don’t enjoy reading about Biothesda MC ships either because 9 out of 10 times they are self inserts/uninteresting OCs unless they use the defaults and even then.

Part of the reason I liked 3 houses better was you could only change the main character to a certain extent. So I do think there is still characterization that is constant across the board no matter how you play.
